Fasting Kachori – Vrat/Upwas Ka Khana

           Happy Navratri to all Smile Navratri recipes are usually no onion no garlic and completely vegetarian. Upwas or fasting kachori is made during Navratri or for any other fasting day. This is simple and easy to make using handy ingredients. This is crunchy & combination of potato, sabudana flour, stuffed with coconut and raisins.


        During fasting days people use certain flours like singhade ka atta (water chestnut flour), sabudana flour, samo rice flour( barnyard millet flour) or rajgire ka atta (amranth flour). So this upwas ki kachori is a great and filling snack. Interesting and tasty stuffing gives a twist to the regular kachoris. This can be paired with cocumber raita or yogurt. You must try it out !!

Prep Time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Makes: 12



Potato boiled


Roasted sabudana flour

3–4 tsp


to taste

Oil / ghee

For deep frying

For stuffing


1 tsp

Cumin seeds

1/2 tsp

Shredded coconut

1 cup

Roasted peanut powder

2 tsp

Green chili paste

1/2 tsp


to taste


1/4 tsp


1 tsp

Cashew (chopped)

1 tsp

 How to make?
  • Grate boiled potatoes very finely or you can strain it through fine mesh.  In a mixing bowl add grated potatoes, sabudana flour and salt. Combine well and form a smooth dough, if required add extra flour( I used 3 tsp flour ).  Keep aside for 10 minutes.


  • Meanwhile prepare the stuffing. Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and green chili paste, shredded coconut, peanut powder, raisins, sugar and salt.  fry for 4-5 minutes and turn off the flame.


  • Heat up oil for deep frying. Make lemon size dough balls, grease your palm with little ghee /water. Gently flattened the dough on your palm and make a dent in center. place 1 tsp of stuffing in a center.  Gather all the edges and seal them nicely. Apply same process with rest of kachoris.


  • Drop 2-3 kachoris at time. Deep fry them on medium flame till golden brown in color.


  • Serve hot with curd or cucumber raita !!




Notes :

  • Serve hot and eat hot.

  • You can add rajgira flour, singhada flour instead of sabudana flour.

  • You may replace potato with sweet potato.

  • If you don’t have fast, you can use all purpose flour or corn flour.

  • Roast sabudana on medium flame till slightly golden and brown. cool down completely and grind it in mixie and make smooth flour. Sieve this flour and use in your fasting recipes.
