Lobia Masala - Black-eyed Bean Curry - Chavlichi Bhaji

     Are you getting bored with eating regular Dal Fry or Dal Makhani, then you have to try this healthy, protein rich lobia masala with hot chapati/phulka. The black-eyed beans or lobia are pressure cooked and simmered in onion tomato gravy with other spices.

     Lentils and leafy vegetables plays a vital role in our everyday menu. I am always trying to find out new ways to fit more lentils in my diet to make perfect healthy and nutritious meal. Try out this easy and masaledar lobia with chapati or hot jeera rice !!

                                 

 

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Serves: 2

 

Ingredient

Lobia / Cowpeas

1 cup

Onion

1

Tomato

2

Red chilli powder

1/2 tsp

Garam masala

1/2 tsp

Coriander powder

1/2 tsp

Turmeric

1/2 tsp

Salt

To taste

Sugar

1/4 tsp

Lemon juice

1 tsp

Coriander leaves

3 tsp

 

To Temper

Oil

2 tsp

Cumin seeds

1/2 tsp

Mustard seeds

1/2 tsp

Bay leaves

2

Ginger garlic paste

1 tsp

 

How to make?

  • Finely chopped onion and tomatoes.

  • Pressure cook lobia with 1 & 1/2 cup water for 3-4 whistles or till tender and keep aside. Heat oil in kadai and tempered with items under ‘’To Temper’’ and fry for few seconds.

  • Add finely chopped onion and cook till turn pink. Add tomatoes with little salt and fry till mushy.

  • Add the turmeric, red chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder and required salt. Cook for 5 minutes till oil leaves from sides.

  • Add cooked labia and stir well. Finally add sugar and lemon juice and little water. Cook for another 5 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

  • Serve hot with hot chapati/Fulka and salad !

Notes :

  • To reduce time of cooking, you can soak lobia overnight or 6-7 hrs in water.

  • If you want to make creamy curry, add butter or fresh cream.
